My parents were very active in their community. After serving as a Captain in the Army Air Force in World War II, my father, Leonard L. Madison, M.D., served as a professor of medicine at Southwestern Medical School (UT Medical Science Center) and as a physician at Parkland Hospital in Dallas for over 50 years. Although he was offered lucrative positions at other medical schools and private practice, he declined these offers and stayed at Southwestern Medical School and Parkland Hospital teaching medical students and taking care of patients, many of which had no financial resources to pay for medical care.

My mother, Carol Madison, was a licensed clinical social worker in Dallas for over twenty years. She served as the Assistant Director of the Dallas Mental Health Association (MHA) and maintained a private counseling practice that included counseling women who were victims of physical violence and mental abuse. She helped found the first battered women’s shelter in Dallas and was recognized as a leader in supporting the right of women to be independent and free from abuse and violence. She also served as Program Director for the MHA and founded dozens of support groups, including: Depressives Anonymous and Parents of Murdered Children. This sense of devotion to the community was instilled in me at an early age.

My personal devotion to community service began at Washington University when I was a college student. I joined University City’s Police Department as an unpaid Reserve Officer. After transferring to University of Texas in Austin, I served as a First Responder with Travis County Rescue. Upon graduation from UT, I served as an unpaid reserve police officer with Rollingwood Police Department. While attending University of Houston Law School, I served as an unpaid Reserve Deputy Constable with Harris County Constable Walter Rankin. After graduating from law school in 1981, I served on numerous State Bar and Texas Supreme Court committees.
One of my proudest accomplishments was chairing the Texas Young Lawyers Child Abuse Committee. I created the idea and script for a “good touch-bad touch” Public Service Announcement (PSA). The script was drafted, the Dallas Cowboys Football Team was contacted, and world famous Dallas Cowboys running back Tony Dorsett agreed to star in our PSA to help prevent child molestation. This 30-second PSA took a year to create, script, produce, edit, and finish. In 1985 this PSA was entered into a 50 state American Bar Association contest for Best Public Service Announcement. Our PSA won 1st place! Click here to watch this award-winning public service announcement.
